Creative Brief

Logo for Ecomine: Eco-friendly urban mining

Ecomine

Eco-friendly urban mining

No

Ecomine is a Malaysia-based startup with a focus on developing technology for recycling high-value waste.

The Eco- in Ecomine comes from Economical/Ecological and the -mine comes from the concept of "Urban Mining" - recovering valuable minerals from the urban environment. Please look at http://urbanmining.org to understand what it's all about. The name is pronounced Eco-mine, not Eh-com-een.

Ecomine's slogan is "Eco-friendly urban mining". It is important that the logo has an ecologically aware / green vibe. Also, the logo could have a technology vibe. It should be clean and professional, but not boring like a dentist/lawyers logo - more a fun, silicon valley sort of logo.

You can include the tagline if you want. Or if you think it looks bad, forget it.

The target audience is three-fold:

1) Investors - I need to attract rich Chinese Malaysians to invest in Ecomine. They are modern, professional, keen on new ideas, and not reserved like Europeans. Be creative! Overall, Ecomine must look like a commercial success!
2) The Malaysian government may provide assistance to our project. The Malaysian government is very keen on helping new high tech industry. It is very important that we have a clean, eco-aware and high-tech image.
3) We will be buying waste from scrapyards. Scrapyard operators are down-to-earth people who get many many business cards. Most of these business cards are plain, boring and old-fashioned. Our brand must stand out and stick in their memory so they remember us when we visit again a month later. This is less important: focus on the investors and the government!

Green symbolises Eco-friendly. You can choose the green. I really don't know what other colours I want. Surprise me!

3

Some ideas that spring into my mind are:

1) Help me choose a company colour. I think a light green would be best.
2) Eco-friendly is important, but avoid cliches like the recycling triangle (unless it is very artistic or well hidden!). Also, no flowers, trees, plants, etc. We are not a gardening business - we are just an industrial company that wants to look green!
3) Ecomine is all one word and only the E is capital. If you want to do different colours for the Eco- and the -mine, then maybe that would be ok also?
4) How can you do hi-tech? Circuit boards and that kind of thing could be a bit cliche. But you can try it if you think it will work.
5) Same with the 'mining'. If you think you can pull it off without making it look cliched or industrial then go for it. Otherwise, leave it out.
6) I'd like a flashy looking logo. Something a bit 3D or a bit fancy. Overall, something that looks beautiful and stands out.

Please remember: I'm a scientist, not an artist. I honestly cannot draw anything more than stick men. So, if you think I have the wrong idea about the design, then please show me a better way!

I look forward to working with the many talented designers here and I'll give as much feedback as I can at every stage!

I am on Malaysian time (GMT +8) so please forgive me if my feedback appears delayed! :)

Thankyou very kindly,

- Leo

#103: Again, this is nice. But a bit wishy-washy - not strong and defined. #104: This is really nice. I'd rotate the world a bit more, though. It's centered on the Phillipines/Papua at the moment. Better to center it on Singapore/West Malaysia/Thailand, or maybe a few degrees off the West coast of Malaysia, because that would include more land and therefore balance the colours. #105: I prefer 104. #116: Still feels wishy-washy / pale / not strong. It's quite complicated yet it doesn't have the strong constrasts needed to enforce complexity. #117, #118, #119, #120: Very similar to existing designs. Also, they do not really grab me. #121: Quite nice, but again, it doesn't really grab me. I will give private feedback for all Jynemaze's designs. At this stage, I am strongly favouring Jynemaze's 3-green-men-flying-around-the-world design and I only want to change the font. I am still open to other ideas, but only if they are _very_ good.

Ok, the contest is back online. Apparently the reason was that I listed my location as Malaysia yet my IP address appeared to be coming from Singapore. This is because I use a VPN... Again, I think this is totally stupid. Sorry for the trouble, everyone. Please continue! - Leo

#88, 89, 90, 91: A nice evolution. I really really love #91. Maybe a different font would improve it? Apart from that, it's awesome. #92, #98, #99: These are nice. Good solid logos that also look good in black-and-white. One thing... the Earth must be centered on our home country: Malaysia! #97, #100, #101: I'm not really enjoying these so much. #102: Very interesting. It doesn't really grab me, but it's certainly an interesting concept - caring for the earth, and being industrial also. So, it's a very clever logo but not as aesthetically pleasing as some of the others. 3 hours until ZillionDesign's offices open. I'll phone them immediately.

Hello everyone, Zilliondesigns has put this project on hold since they have apparently been unable to contact me. This is absolutely stupid - my phone has been on all the time and I have had no missed calls. Also, I think it is disrespectful, unnecessary, bad business practice, and plain stupid to put this project on hold while they figure out how to use a telephone. I apologise to all of you designers. I hope they will be able to fix this as soon as morning arrives in the USA. - Leo ps. Here is the email they sent: Dear Leopold, This is in reference to your project “Logo for Ecomine: Eco-friendly urban mining ". #85, #86: Very nice. I'd favour a darker grey or black for the tagline but otherwise it looks very polished. #87: Colourful, but too complicated, too badly defined. I think it'd look bad on paper.

#75, #76, #77, #78, #79: Jynemaze's stuff is looking amazing. We still have 4 days left, but for now, these are my favourite. #80, #81: It's a pleasant-enough logo but it expresses mining, not /urban/ mining. UM is very different from regular mining. Honestly not bad, but I think far too plain overall. #82, #83, #84: Simple but very effective. Yeah, very nice indeed.

#69, #70. Thanks, muhammadrashid, but I really don't like these logos. I'm very happy with the horizontal logo:Ecomine/tagline format being used by jynemaze, lakshmikk, wahyu-setyadi-58 and mjstud.

#64: This feels similar to #42, #43, #44. Lighter and more uplifting, but the logo does not express anything to me. It's abstract but ultimately empty. #65, #66, #67: This one is a step backwards. #31 was better. I'll message more specific feedback. #68: Yeah, this one is really nice. I'll send more feedback by private message.

#53: Nicely done, but not what I'm after. This is a very traditional logo, whereas I am looking for a high tech cutting edge logo. #54, #60: I'm sorry, I'm not enjoying these. These are very abstract with no embedded symbols - they do not say what the company is about. #61: This has no relevance to my company at all. Sorry. #55: Nice-looking text. I'd prefer this with a normal 'o'. But also, a text logo on it's own is not enough. I'm looking for a graphical logo + text. #56, #57, #58: I don't enjoy these at all. Sorry, jackHmill! #62: Good, but #63 is better. #63: Awesome. I'll see if I have any more thoughts about this one later. For now, it's a really strong contender. So far, these are my four favourites: http://samulis.org/fourfavourites.png

#42,#43,#44: They look professional but they do not uplift and inspire. Maybe the colours are too dark and sludgy? Logos look nice with a variety of colours - light AND dark. Also, these are interesting motifs, but none of these motifs express Eco/urban mining/recycling. These motifs have no meaning. #45: Too simple, too leafy and too feminine. It tries to communicate Eco- but does not communicate anything abut urban mining. #46: Interesting, original, but not what I'm looking for. Plus, I think only finance/legal should use that font :) #47, #48, #49: The stylised 'e' is a LOT better than a stylsed 'E'. I think these motifs are graphically ok, but don't contain symbology or communicate themes. So they feel 'empty' to me. #50: Oh wow. This one is really striking. What needs changing? Ok: 1) The "ECOMINE" looks horrible. 'Ecomine' in a softer font would work. 2) The tagline needs to be a bit clearer. 3) The leaves are too big and the world is too small. 4) Is that a grid around the world? Awesome. Grids communicate science, engineering, etc. 5) Needs more urban mining / science / technology symbology and smaller leaves, so that the Eco- symbology is less dominant. #51: Good concept, but too green. Plants and leaves _only_ work when they are well integrated and do not stand out. #52: Again, really nice. The leaves are hidden, and the 'veins' are lightning bolts that symbolise electricity. Brilliant ideas! Actually, this logo would be spot on for a solar power company :) A few ideas: 1) Replace the orange sun with something else - maybe a hidden city landscape, maybe an Earth globe. 2) Make the leaves a little smaller. 3) Fix the text - the font is not nice. Overall, very good. #50 and #52 contain tons of potential.

Lakshmikk has a really interesting theme going on with the 3 leaves. But it needs darker colours. Also, the leaves could have more imagery - make the veins into circuit board tracks or something like that. jynemaze has done so many good logos. The basic layout is very solid. To move forward, two things are neeed: 1) Darker colours to project strength, solidity, seriousness. 2) A left hand image that expresses Eco-friendly urban mining. I like logos with more symbology inside them. Not people, not leaves, not water, but things like: Machine Industrial Urban/City landscape Technology/PCB Value, metals, money And I think I would like a logo with two forms. The horizontal form that jynemaze does so perfectly, and also the vertical form like in #41 and #6. One is better for letterheads/business cards, the other for presentations. Really great so far. This is not just about developing a logo. This is actually changing the way I think about how to market my business. Thankyou all!

#16: Far too minimalistic. Not suitable, sorry. #17,#19,#20: Interesting stylised 'E'. Unfortunately 'E' is such an ugly letter. 'e' would be a better base. Overall I don't like these logos. They don't say Eco-friendly or technology or recycling. All of jynemaze's stuff: Wow. This stuff is good! I think the overall theme of symbol:Ecomine:tagline is a real winner. At a later stage, perhaps a couple of variations would be good - this format + one big logo with text underneith (like #41). Let me try to comment on each one: #18: Two criticisms: 1) The 'mine' looks weak compared to the 'Eco'. Maybe it needs bolding? 2) Overall too simple and feminine. Awesome first attempt & I really love the two-tone colours on the Eco and mine. Light at the top and darker at the bottom. VERY effective! #21: Nicer font. Tagline looks good (tagline colour is too light though). Symbol looks very cool... Is that a world inside there or is it buildings? Maybe a little city hidden in there would give the urban concept in urban mining? Plus, I really like the 3 things around the logo. 3 is the recycling concept, and the 'pointy' look makes it overall more masculine. This one is definitely heading in the right direction. #22: Too simple. Too light. It's got the ecology theme, but it does not have the urban/mining/industrial/recycling theme. #23: The tagline is the wrong colour: should be black or dark gray. Hell of an interesting logo. To improve it, I think more imagery would help. So are the 3 black things mobile phones? Good! Phones, circuit boards, etc. And also, the logo's still too 'light' - not enough dark colours too convey strength and solidity. #24: No. The 'e' is too much like a leaf. Combined with the mountains/water, it gives the impression of a traditional mining company. Wrong for Ecomine. I do love the way you present the image inside the swirl. Very practical. #25: One square logo :) I think squares don't work. For me, the square symbolises limitation, compactness, and a finished product. So it would look great on the side of an Eco-friendly refrigerator. But not good for my business! The black tagline looks awesome, btw. Small, compact, extremely clear, and helps add some solid dark colours to the image. #26: People! Argh. No, I don't want people on my logo. We're not a people-facing business, we're a technical business. #27: Is it a seed? Good overall. Black tagline looks awesome, same as #25 and #26. #28: Eeek! No people, please :) #29: The people are disguised this time and the triangle looks like jaws from a machine or something. Good, because these logos need a more 'machine' vibe. Tagline is too light, also. #33: No people, please :) Also, the logo looks far too feminine and 'lightweight' overall. #34, #35: Pretty, but far too light. #36: The world is drowning! :) Too much blue. The blue is not important - the green should be more important. But still, the logo has too much colour and not enough symbology. #30,#31,#32: #31 is the best of these three. I treat this one like a concept art. It's really clever and creative but it's not the finished product. Firstly, I'd change the colours: still far too light. The colours must convey solidity and strength! Secondly, the leaves are screaming out to be embellished. Could they be made to look like PCBs (circuit boards) ? A PCB/leaf motif could look awesome. #37: I don't like this one. Fire symbolises destruction... it looks like the fire is burning the Eco. Sounds like the situation in Sumatra, ya? :) #38: Too flowery, too stylised, too feminine. The green is wrong, also. This green is for gardening/horticulture, not technology/industry. #39/#40: Interesting stylised 'e'. At the moment, too minimal and too light. Pastel colours do not project the strength/solidity that we need! I feel the symbol should be more sophisticated, also. Good start, though. Well done. #41: Different and interesting. A few thoughts: 1) 'Ecomine' is better than 'ECOMINE'. 2) The green is too dark - not lively enough. 3) Symbol is interesting but perhaps some relevance to E-waste/recycling/Eco ? 4) I like this format, but maybe try it also in the horizontal format that lakshmikk started in #14? Overall, something different and a good start. Thanks, InventiveStylus.

#7 is better than #6. I really like the green/gray text. Overall, I like it. My girlfriend says "seen it before" - maybe looks too much like the old SGI logo? #8 does not carry enough weight. It seems too light-coloured, too rounded, and too inoffensive! #9: I really love the way you get the tagline in there - top marks for that (btw. it should be 'Eco-friendly', not 'Eco friendly' - hyphen, not space). Overall not so keen on this logo since it seems too lightweight and too 'fun' - not a serious industrial company. #10 is even more fun so less suitable. Imagine the logo on the side of an industrial building. It needs to look strong, solid, and in control. It needs to dominate over the industrial landscape below it. #11: Too lightweight. It's inoffensive and pleasing to the eye, but does not carry enough "weight". #12/#13: I feel these colours do not work. One of the colours really needs to be eco- green. #14/#15: Very creative. The three leaves look good. The veins on the leaves look a bit like a circuit board, which goes with the electronic waste theme. A nice little shadow under the leaves also! And the tagline is fitted in perfectly. I prefer the font in #14 - it is more solid and impressive. The colours are too light overall. Maybe the Eco could be darker, and so could the tagline. Overall, a really nice attempt. Also, I definitely prefer the designs with a symbol in (#1, #4, #7, #14). I think the symbol is very important as people remember it instantly. It's 11 pm so I'm going to bed now. Awesome work for the first day. Thanks :)

#3: I feel mountains. I feel something consumer-oriented. Good for a hiking shoe. Definitely not the sort of thing I am after though, sorry. #4: Two criticisms: The recycling logo is cliched so if you must use it, make it more derived and more sophisticated. Secondly, the logo looks too plain overall. But honestly, a good start! Terima kasih, wahyu! #5: like #4 but with a bad colour choice. #1 and #4 are my favourites so far.

Draft #2: Not so keen. Too soft, too rounded, too urbanite. We're a technology/industry outfit. We're talking a large industrial yard full of urban waste. We're talking lots of metal lying around the place. I like Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, and Judas Priest. Lol, is that too much info? :)

Draft #1: I'm not keen on the black logo, but the white one is nice. I like the green:gray colour combo. That really works. Overall, it feels a bit too 'rounded' and too 'Eco' and not enough to do with technology/hi-tech. Good start!
