Bellwether 2016

One town always picks the winning president...

Yes

project trailer: www.bellwether2016.org
Knight Foundation entry: http://kng.ht/19MCrmR

Bellwether investigates why one place in America has consistently voted for the winning president -- Vigo County, Indiana. The county seat, Terre Haute, claims the nickname "The Crossroads of America". What will it tell us about our nation in 2016.

The web-series will integrate broadcast-quality documentary segments profiling influential and representative people, places, events, and activities with locally generated, lower-production value video "postcards" & "portraits". Additional resources will include opinion polls, text articles, historic electoral results, demographics, and economic data. The website will go live in November 2015 and track the following campaign year through the lens of life in this emblematic corner of the American heartland.

Red & Blue

2

Red vs. Blue presents a possible design dynamic to explore, however, politics in Vigo County are more personal and friendly than confrontational. The program doesn't take sides or depict a "fight". The program will be built on the voices and POV of various local individuals.

The center of downtown Terre Haute, "The Crossroads" is where two of the most important national highways intersected in the days before the interstate -- US 40, "The National Road", running east and west; and US 41, the main north-south route between Chicago & New Orleans.

The city of Terre Haute is heavily democratic (donkey?), a stronghold for union labor and maintains the feeling of a rustbelt industrial center (despite the loss of many industries and factories). The surrounding rural area is mostly farmland, principally producing corn, and strongly conservative (elephant?).

Ballot imagery makes sense, but I'm not sure a single iconic image will conjure "ballot" or voting booth in every mind. The American flag also seems like a possible element -- although it may feel too "easy".

The Vigo County courthouse is a strong local icon, but means little or nothing to anyone outside of the region, however, it could echo the White House?

At the risk of annoying all participants, hers a new idea -- I love many of the designs you have all submitted, but I ask you to please consider an entirely different direction that has come up from my partners. Rather than boil down the meaning of the project into a single image, try a swarm of icons in red, blue & purple: ...hand tools, an ear of corn or wheat, a car, a bicycle, a shotgun, a pistol, religious symbols, the peace sign, the US flag, the Confederate flag, a deer, an eagle, a turkey, a dove, knife and fork, bread, a wine bottle, a beer can, donkey & elephant, a book, a camera, a microscope, a cellphone, a TV, a railroad engine, a jet airliner, a fighter plane, a battleship, a bomb, the space station, a rolled diploma, a sandwich, money, US map, a baby, a cane, a pill, a hypodermic needle, a filling station petrol hose, a baseball, a football, a basketball, a campaign button, a hand shake, thumbs up, thumbs down, the White House, the Capitol dome… I hope you get the idea -- a flock of images that represent the range of things that weight on peoples minds every day, and all pulled together (perhaps?) into one larger image: arrows pointing right and left, a ballot box, the US map or flag, the White House or the Capitol dome... I hope you will not feel abused by this sudden change in direction, but I have to respect the ideas of my partners in the project. Thanks you, Don

Below are links to 15 images from the web that may spark your imagination. Please NOTE: these are stock or copyrighted, I do NOT have permission to use them. Some are too complex for a logo or too light-hearted for the project. Still, I hope they inspire your creativity. More than branding the "Bellwether" name, we want to convey the idea of choice, contrasting opinions, change, and decision-making. Think about elements such as a weathervane, crossroad signposts, ballot box and voting, or contrasting symbols -- an ear of corn (for agriculture) and hand wrench or spanner (for manufacturing) or the Democrat party's donkey symbol and the Republican's elephant. Thanks to all, excited to see what these images suggest to you. One theme to consider in a graphic element is the idea of choice -- that there are two sides, two directions to choose from, two options which are more evenly balanced in this one place than anywhere else in the US. Another is the idea that individual people, their voices and differing points of view, all come together to determine the outcome of an election.

Another potential element to consider -- American map divided by a "crossroads" or ballot symbol roughly where Terre haute Indiana is located. Perhaps incorporating US flag imagery in map. And please, these notes are not prescriptive, just suggestions to spark the imagination.

Greetings to all designers interested in Bellwether Logo contest. Try integrating a pictorial element, something that reflects the civic aspect of the project -- stylized US flag, political party icons (elephant & donkey), ballot checkmark, or silhouette/outline of the Vigo County courthouse -- or that echoes the ideas of balance, decision making and intersection of opinions -- such as scales or crossroads. The long horizontal layout seems to work, but don't be afraid of trying something more emblematic, a seal or shield, a flag that incorporates the text. I'd like to get more playful with these concepts. Thanks, Don
